Dean joined the staff at Indiana's NewsCenter as a reporter in December 1974, splitting time between news and sports. His duties were shifted to strictly sports in 1985, and he became Sports Director in August, 1994.

Dean was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, and has a radio-television degree from Southern Illinois University, where he first began his broadcasting career in radio and television. After college, he worked at radio and TV stations in Elkhart, and came to Fort Wayne as a radio newsman in July of 1974. Dean joined Indiana's NewsCenter five months later.

Besides his work at Indiana's NewsCenter, Dean has done work in radio sports for four different area stations in play by play and sports talk, and co created and co hosted Sports Talk on WOWO from 1985 to 2001. Currently, he is a radio and television voice of IPFW men's basketball. The 2005 Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette Reader's Poll named Dean Fort Wayne's favorite television sportscaster, and he has been honored with awards for distinguished service from the Indiana High School Athletic Association, the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association, the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association, and the Indiana Interscholastic Athletic Administrators' Association.

Dean is a sports fan even when not working, and enjoys playing all sports, especially basketball and softball, as well as travel, music, and movies. He and his wife Becky, a Fort Wayne native, have a daughter, Melanie, of Cincinnati, Ohio, an elementary school teacher, and a son, Nick, of Las Vegas, Nevada, a television news photographer.
