Third-Party Indiana gubernatorial bid possible

By Peter Neumann

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - State Senator John Waterman wants to run for
governor under the banner of a new party that favors the repeal of
state property taxes. And his running mate for Lieutenant Governor is from Fort Wayne.

The 52-year-old Waterman is a Republican from southwest Indiana's Sullivan County. He and running mate Glenna Jehl (YALE) of Fort Wayne will need to collect about 33,000 signatures from registered voters by June 30th to get on the ballot in November against Republican Governor Mitch Daniels, Democrat Jill Long Thompson and Libertarian Andrew Horning.

Waterman says if he's elected, his new Taxpayers Party will
dissolve on January 20th and he'll serve his term in office as a
Republican.

Waterman voted for a major property tax relief and restructuring
bill pushed by Daniels and enacted into law this year. But he says
the law does not go far enough.
