FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--A REALLY LOVELY SIGN WELCOMES NEWCOMERS TO THE SUMMIT CITY. BUT IS THAT ENOUGH?

Teacher: Is that what you’re trying to find out what his involvement was or what role he played?

A REAL FORT WAYNE WELCOME, IN FACT A GUIDE TO THE SUMMIT CITY, IS IN THE MAKING AT FORT WAYNE’S CANTERBURY SCHOOL.

Judy: So we want other families and perhaps a family that is contemplating moving to Fort Wayne but aren’t sure, maybe this could be the turning point for them.

THESE KIDS ARE RESEARCHING FORT WAYNE, ITS HISTORY, POLITICS, ECONOMICS, ATTRACTIONS, FAMOUS PERSONALITIES...AND PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER IN A NEW BOOK..’FORT WAYNE THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD’…TO BE PUBLISHED IN 2009.

Savanna Hollis: I’m working on Margaret Ringenberg. What have you learned about her? That she was one of the first flyers in Fort Wayne.

Merritt Lamm: I’m putting down information on James Beasley from the Internet. He appeared at the World Youth Championship in Nigeria with the U20 United States Team.

THE BOOK IS A SCHOOL-WIDE PROJECT. THERE IS RESEARCH, WRITING, FIELD TRIPS, PHOTOGRAPHY..AND ILLUSTRATING. ONCE ITS PUBLISHED YOU’LL FIND ‘FORT WAYNE THROUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD’ AT THE VISITORS AND CONVENTION BUREAU, THE AIRPORT..ANYPLACE A NEWCOMER MIGHT LOOK FOR INFORMATION. AMONG THE MANY LESSONS THIS PROJECT HAS TO TEACH THESE YOUNG AUTHORS, IS THE ALL-IMPORTANT ONE OF GIVING BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY.

Judy: I think they often think you have to be a grownup to do something that’s very important and we want them to realize that everyone has the opportunity to give back and be a part of their community and do something that’s noteworthy.

LIKE WELCOMING FOLKS TO YOUR COUNTRY WITH MORE THAN A NICE SIGN. THIS IS ERIC OLSON REPORTING.
