FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)-It’s another school day at the David and Therese Smith household. Therese home schools her kids. She has eight of them, seven boys and one very precious little girl. The Smith’s are devout Catholics, a fact that has led this family on a very interesting journey of discovery. The Smith children are acclaimed performers of Gregorian chants, 1500 hundred year old prayers sung by medieval catholic monks. The kids dad David is an independent music producer, worked on a chant cd for a client. The kids heard it and began singing the music on their own. So the parents made Gregorian chants part of the home school day.

“It’s something that our whole family could participate in,” says David Smith. “We’ve always dreamed of doing something musically the whole family could participate in. The kids took to it like fish to water.”

“It was incredible how much they liked singing it, says mom Therese. “Number one they have to learn patience and cooperation, and they have to work together.”

The kid’s singing became so popular locally the Smiths have produced a pair of cd’s, sell them online…and they’ve recorded two scholastic DVD’s with accompanying books, that teach the art and history of Gregorian chanting. The DVD’s have been picked up by two catholic home school organizations for their curricula and a third is considering it. So thanks to Fort Wayne’s Smith family the ancient sounds of medieval worship may soon be emanating from home school classrooms all across the country.
