FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Teachers, dedicated to shaping the lives of our children, often depend on parents and grandparents to volunteer.
There couldn't be a better example of an "Angel" volunteer than Marti Evans of Fort Wayne.
And, when students and staff at Emmaus Lutheran School asked yours truly to announce our "Angel" the other day, let's just say I wasn't telling anyone there... anything they didn't already know.
The enrollment counselor nominated Mrs. Evans.
Marti and her husband have spent the better part of 40 years giving their time to the school.
They raised their two boys and now have a grandchild there.
And, Marti is dealing with cancer. But, she decorates the halls at Emmaus, no matter the holiday.
It all began when Marti was asked to repair some old, tattered costumes for the Christmas play.
She replaced everything, even the sets!
Marti Evans said, "When I had the costumes all made and put them on the little ones, the joy that you get from their squeals, the look in their eyes. They had shiny bright new costumes! The hugs! Why would someone not want to continue, and I made a decision that moment. This is what I wanted to do with my life."
Lisa Terrell, who nominated Marti, said, "Our school teaches kids about volunteering. I attended Emmaus when I was younger, and as a child, you have one view. Now as an adult, you just think so much more even highly of what she does and just what an amazing job she does for our school."
Marti said, "I hope that they learn that the more you give, the more you receive."
Marti and her husband also help with the spring program. It's added up to thousands of hours.
Doctors can't operate but hope to get her cancer through treatment.
Marti is a strong, beautiful woman... inside and out.
Please remember Angels Among Us and nominate someone special.
