FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - It truly was an honor to meet 90 year old Demaris Schebig, "Dee."
She lives at a northeast Fort Wayne apartment complex, nominated by her maintenance manager.
Everyone there thinks the world of her.
The stories Dee can tell!
The North Webster native is a trained hair stylist, World War II veteran who served in the Women Army Corps, and an Honor Flight veteran, having made the trip to Washington, D.C. to see the WAC monument and other monuments so important to her and to her generation.
Dee lost her beloved husband nearly 30 years ago. They'd visited the 50 states together, and she placed little "pieces" of those trips in memory jars.
They planned on more vacations.
Instead, her great-nephew took her on some world travels, and her daughter created a scrapbook of her life!
A long, meaningful life of a woman who wasn't going to sit and be sad about her loss and other "bumps in the road" as she puts it.
She devoted herself to others.
Dee Schebig says, "Whenever you see someone that you think needs help, never walk away."
Jill Bales, property manager, says, "She is going back and forth all day long like people our age do. She never stops. She takes people to lunch. She takes them gifts. She's got my daughter a birthday card each years since I've been here. She remembers everything, dates, times everything. She's a gem."
Gary Momenee, maintenance manager, says, "I think she can teach others to be more like God intended us to be like. She's quite an inspiration. I just can't thank her enough for the things that she does, and the things that she teaches me, and the stories she tells and the candy bars!"
Dee says, "I sat at my kitchen table, and I wrote down all these things. I could make soup and cookies, and if there was someone that needed help, I could take them to a doctor, take them shopping, and it would fill my life. God takes good care of me. He put me here with these people, and He puts me in places where I can do something for someone, and it keeps me busy, and it fills my life, and it keeps my morale up, and keeps me happy
Dee has family close and is thankful for their love and for her Faith.
She'll turn 91 in October.
Please keep those Angel nominations coming!
