FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - The men and women who willingly fight for our freedom are Angels, and I met an amazing local example.
22 year old Randi Brock nominated her 25 year old brother, Jeremiah Hughes.
Jeremiah enlisted in the Army about a year ago and fights on the front lines in Afghanistan.
He's father to 3 year old Roman and was recently on his third leave, saying he wants to set a good example for his son.
Randi calls her brother her "hero" for teaching her so much and for being so brave.
Randi Brock said, "He came to me on my birthday and said, I'm leaving today. I'm joining the Army, and I'm going to change my life. He has a son, and he wanted to show his son that he was worth more than just an everyday man. And, I just thought it was the coolest thing. A complete stranger could walk up to him and ask for anything, and if he had it, it'd be gone."
Jeremiah Hughes said, "Everybody that I know that has served doesn't speak about it in the negative. It's something they were very proud of. The benefits were obviously a big point forward to give my son an education and things that I didn't have growing up. The choice just became clear, and I had all the support in the world from the men I worked with, from my family, and I knew they'd all be supporting me back here and would be here when I came home, so, I just took that jump, and I'm glad I did. I've loved it ever since. Family is everything you have. At the end of the day, if you've lost everything else, that's something you never lose."
Randi is in remission from Hodgkin's Lymphoma and credits Jeremiah for helping her make it through a very difficult time.
Jeremiah's enlistment is for 5 years and 16 weeks. He says even though good-byes are difficult, his family keeps him strong.
We at Indiana's NewsCenter wish him the best, and I hope viewers will continue to send in their Angel nominations for people in our community who do remarkable things for others. Just go to www.incnow.tv and click on the Angels Among Us icon on the lower, right-hand corner of the front page.
