Event Description
Parkview Health Community Nursing will be offering nearly 1,000 doses of the flu mist vaccine, free, to children who qualify. Taking into consideration the flu is widespread throughout the state of Indiana as defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Parkview Health officials are strongly encouraging healthy children six months and older, who have not received this year’s vaccine, to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
Since October 1, 2012, there have been eighteen influenza-associated pediatric deaths and more than 2,000 influenza-associated hospitalizations reported in the U.S. Seven people have died in the state of Indiana, two were pediatric patients. According to the CDC, influenza is spreading at an alarming rate with 41 states seeing widespread illness.
Every year an average of 20,000 children under the age of 5 are hospitalized because of influenza complications. Influenza can be very dangerous for children with severe complications most common in children younger than 2 years old. Children commonly need medical care when they fall ill with the flu, especially those younger than 5 years old.
The free flu mist vaccine will be offered to eligible children who are on Hoosier Healthwise or have no health insurance or insurance that does not pay for vaccines. Children must also be healthy with no chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, seizures or heart conditions.
Parkview Health Community Nursing officials will be offering the free flu mist vaccines on the floowing dates:
•Friday, Jan. 11, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. at the Carew Medical Center, 181 Carew St., Fort Wayne
•Monday, Jan. 14, from 1 - 5 p.m. at the K21 Health Services Pavilion, Conference Rooms A & B, 1515 Provident Drive, Warsaw
