More than 17,000 plastic duckies are looking for sponsors who will give them a chance to swim to victory in the annual Weigand Construction Duck Race to Benefit SCAN (Stop Child Abuse and Neglect), The race is June 15th on the St. Joseph River in Johnny Appleseed Park.
This is the Silver Anniversary for the Duck Race, which has gained regional and national attention through the years. Sponsors of the first 25 ducks to cross the finish line win great prizes, all donated, including $5,000 cash donated by Weigand Construction for the first-place winner, $1,000 cash from an anonymous donor for second place and $500 cash donated by Strahm Building Solutions for third place. Duck sponsors do not have to be present at the race to win.
Cost to sponsor a duck is $5, the same price of sponsorship 25 years ago. “Duck Deals” enable sponsors to purchase in quantity at a cost savings. Duck Deals are: 1 for $5, 5 for $20, 13 for $50, 25 for $90 and 40 for $140.
This year’s goal is to raise $155,000 through the Duck Race, with proceeds providing crucial funding for SCAN’s programs and services that protect children from abuse and neglect in 19 northern Indiana counties; 95 cents of every dollar raised goes directly toward programming. In 2012, SCAN directly impacted the lives of more than 18,400 children and adults.
More than 30 local businesses have duck certificates on hand, ready for purchase. A full listing of where you can buy your ducks, of the 25 prizes, and details on donating to SCAN are available on SCAN’s Website at www.scanfw.org.
