Science Central goes to the grown-ups on Friday, November 1, as it hosts its annual fundraising gala, Mixology 301: The Science of Cocktails. The event, which runs from 6:30-10:30 p.m. at Science Central, 1950 N. Clinton Street, will showcase the past, present and future of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education to the Fort Wayne community, and demonstrate that science is fun for everyone, regardless of age.

The grownups-only gala event will feature two mixologists – one a nationally-recognized award-winner, and one a Fort Wayne favorite, demonstrating the latest in specialty cocktails. Arthur Black, a wine and food professional from Miami, Florida, and Tim Atz, a Kendallville native who graduated at the top of his class from the Professional Bartending School of America, will prepare specialty cocktails, and present lessons on the science behind cocktails.

In another unique educational twist, this year’s food will be catered by Ivy Tech culinary students, who will also conduct food demonstrations with cutting-edge gastronomic tools. “We’ve been very impressed by the gastronomy demonstrations that Ivy Tech students presented to us at our last two events,” said Science Central Executive Director Martin S. Fisher. “We felt they earned a chance to bid on catering the event, and they did an amazing job of developing a menu that is both fun and delicious.”

Under the direction of Jeff Bunting, Hospitality Administration Program Chair at Ivy Tech, the students will create a wide selection of food to tempt the taste buds, including appetizers, entrees and desserts. A sampling of the evening’s menu includes: lettuce spring rolls with red pepper aioli, lobster grapefruit shooters, crab and avocado spoons, smoked firecracker shrimp, carved flank steak sliders with Asian slaw, cheesecake pops and fall-spiced truffles.

In addition, a silent auction with items ranging from Walt Disney World passes, a television from Audio-Visual Lifestyles, a flight lesson, rental of a Florida condo, and a dolphin encounter will take place during the course of the evening.

Music for the event will be provided by the Todd Harrold Band, and guests will be able to experience Science Central’s new Science On a Sphere exhibit during Mixology 301.

Tickets are $60 per person, $100 per couple, or $350 for a group of eight tickets. Presenting sponsor for the event is Exelis Corporation; Masters Level Sponsors are Fort Wayne Metals and Indiana Tech; Bachelors Level Sponsors are Barnes & Thornburg, BKD, Ivy Tech, and Lincoln Financial Foundation; Associates Level Sponsors include The DeHayes Group; Fetters Constructions, Old National Bank, OmniSource and Sanco Industries.
