Coventry, Stellhorn and Dupont Taekwondo are gearing up for their 12th annual Taekwondo tournament.
The tournament is scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 13, 2014 from 8:30 am until 5:00 pm at the Grand Wayne Center, 120 West Jefferson Blvd., Fort Wayne, IN.
Competitions for color belts and black belts will take place in the categories of traditional forms & sparring, combat weapons, extreme martial arts forms and weapons, traditional weapons, creative weapons and creative forms. Winners will be judged by high-ranking black belts. Scores are awarded from 9.1 to 9.9 and medals will be given to the top 3 winners in each category.
Expected attendance will top 2,000. Competitors will include men, women, and children of all ages from across the nation.
Coventry Taekwondo USA opened in 1997, Stellhorn Taekwondo opened in 2003 and Dupont Taekwondo opened in 2011, collectively known as Fort Wayne ATA. In seventeen years, over 400 black belts have been trained. Fort Wayne ATA prides itself in being a family martial arts center with over 350 active students ranging in age from three years to senior citizen. In addition to studio lessons, instruction is also provided in many after school programs throughout the community.
Coventry Taekwondo has supported the community through several generous donations, including $2,750 for the Three Rivers Junction Playground, $2,800 for the "Build our Y" campaign for the Jorgensen YMCA, $4,500 for the Fort Wayne Trails Project, over $10,000 for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, and $1000 for the Community Harvest Food Bank.
ATA members represent a cross-section of men, women, and children of all ages, races and religions. Taekwondo is one of the fastest growing sports in America, with over 300,000 members at this time.
