The Isshinryu World Karate Association (IWKA) based in Okinawa, Japan has awarded the local karate club Indianapolis Isshinryu Bushido the rights to conduct the IWKA Isshinryu World Karate Championship
Tournament in June, 2011.
“This is a great honor bestowed upon us by Master Kichiro Shimabuku, of Okinawa" said John Hoffmire, a seventh degree black belt instructor and Head Sensei for Indianapolis Isshinryu Bushido.
"This tournament, held every two years, will be a wonderful opportunity to showcase our dojo [school], and the support we have received from Lawrence Township here in Indianapolis."
The tournament will attract between 500 to 700 male and female participants in more than 65 divisions - Novice, Intermediate, and Advanced - in age groups ranging from six
to 50+ years old. Participants and spectators from several other countries will attend this tournament and seminars that will be conducted during the tournament. Master Shimabuku will preside over the tournament and lead several seminars.
Indianapolis Marriott East has been selected as the ideal location for this tournament – to be held Thursday June 23 through Saturday June 25, 2011 – due to the size and flexibility of its public areas and meeting rooms which will be used for the sponsor midway and multiple-ring tournament layout.
Indianapolis Isshinryu Bushido has its roots in Lawrence Township Community Education, where it began as an all-volunteer organization in 1997. Its emphasis is on furthering the Art of Isshinryu by building character, confidence,
discipline and good sportsmanship in their students. Sensei Hoffmire has assisted with previous IWKA World Championships held in Indianapolis in 1983 and 2001.
