Event Description

Thirty years ago this month, Allen County leaders gathered at the public radio headquarters in Fort Wayne to dedicate new facilities. A plaque honoring the moment still decorates the hallways of WBOI and WBNI, and reads in part, “A new beginning for fine arts public radio in Northeast Indiana.”
Thirty years later, Northeast Indiana Public Radio serves about 50,000 listeners per week in more than a dozen counties across northeast Indiana, offering up a mix of news, public affairs, and jazz on WBOI (89.1 FM), and 24-hour classical music on sister station WBNI (94.1 FM). The stations’ signals are also streamed live on the Web at nipr.fm.
The thirty-year anniversary of the dedication ceremony coincides with the stations’ annual fall fund drive, when listeners contribute the funds needed to keep the station on the air. The fund drive runs from October 13 through October 21st, according to station manager Will Murphy.
“This fund drive is particularly special to me,” Murphy says, “Because we really are heading into the next generation of public radio. Literally thousands of people have kept us on the air over the years, and listener support remains by far the most important component of our funding formula.”
