On Wednesday, April 23rd, Homestead High School’s radio station, WCYT, will be opening its doors to the public to celebrate National High School Radio Day.
National High School Radio Day is a day selected each year that is “dedicated to high school radio stations where students and advisors can celebrate the uniqueness of their program and make their community, their state, and the whole country aware of what they do and how they do it.”
WCYT will be open to the public between the hours of 3:00 and 6:00pm to observe the facilities, equipment, and meet the students and staff that help make the radio station run. There will be students running the station and doing live on-air breaks as well as designated areas with demonstrations of other WCYT broadcasts and productions that air on the radio station or online at www.wcyt.org. There will be prizes given away as well as the opportunity to purchase WCYT merchandise.
WCYT, better known as The Point 91FM on the air, broadcasts on 91.1 FM to Fort Wayne and the surrounding vicnity and is located within Homestead High School. The station has been on the air for nearly 20 years with Homestead High School students overseeing the on-air aspects of the station. Currently, over 120 students participate in the broadcasting program offered at the school, which includes going on the air live to announce music, news, sporting events and news, and weather updates. Some students even get to host their own shows during after-school hours and discuss topics of their own choosing. Students range from freshmen to seniors and four different broadcasting courses are offered during the school year. There are two full-time adult staff members, teacher and radio director, Adam Schenkel, and station manager, Andy Dunn.
WCYT is a non-commercial/not-for-profit organization that is on the air 24 hours a day and plays Indie Rock and Alternative music (the only station in Fort Wayne to offer this format). Select Homestead High School sporting events are broadcasted live by students and all imaging and production that airs on the station is created by students as well.
On the day of the event, please enter Homestead High School through Door #1 and follow the signs to the radio area.
