In less then two weeks, the Appleseed Comic Con is making its way to downtown Fort Wayne and the Grand Wayne Center. The much-anticipated event runs from 10 AM to 6 PM on May 11. The 2013 convention has a guest list that of over one hundred creators, will feature a writing workshop, a living statue workshop, and a kids’ costume contest. The regional event is one that is welcome to comic book fans of all ages and is intended to celebrate the art and craft of comic books, as well as the comics community.
The 2013 guest list boast creators like Lora Innes (The Dreamer), Paul Hornschmeir (Forlorn Funnies), Mike Norton (Spider-Man, Young Justice, Battlepug), Tom Scioli (Captain America: Hail Hydra, Godland), Dave Wachter (Godzilla), and Hilary Barta (The Simpsons, American Splendor, Hellboy, Batman, Fantastic Four, SpongeBob, Spider-Man). “The amount of diversity that we get on the guest list is always impressive to me,” says Zack Kruse, the convention’s organizer. “One of the beautiful things about comics is that there is something out there for everyone. There is no distinct ‘comic book’ style—rather there is simply art in comic book form,” he continues.
But the comic making doesn’t stop with the event’s terrific guest list. This year’s convention will be preceded by a free comic-making workshop for kids under twelve at the downtown branch of the Allen County Public Library on Thursday, May 8. The library event is being organized by the Childrens’ Services department and Erica Anderson-Senter, and will feature local comic book artist, Matt Gross. “[we are] so excited to work along side Matt and Zack, again, to bring a free and exciting comic book program to the kids of our community. Our hope is to spread the word that reading and creating comics is super rad! This year, we're even offering a program geared towards grown-ups! We want them to know that their kids not only love comics, but it's super okay for their children to read them!” says Anderson-Senter.
Anderson-Senter continues, “Matt was great with the kids last year during our first Comic Book Workshop. I don't expect any less from him this year. He's a great artist with a super fun demeanor. I hope the kids have as much fun as I have!”
The grown-up workshop will be held on Thursday, May 9 at 6:00 PM, and it is designed to educate adults on the value of comic books as a medium that blends both art and literature. Anderson-Senter says, “It's great pairing up with Zack right before Appleseed, it allows some of our library customers who might not have known about Appleseed to hear about this awesome downtown event. And it's true the other way around. We hope that this partnership expands the community's knowledge about how Fort Wayne has a lot to offer.”
“Comics are for everyone,” Kruse concludes. “Erica has done some really great things at the library, and I am so happy to be a part of what she has put together for the community. The fact that I get to share my passion for comics and help educate the public because of her thrills me to no end.”
Sponsored by 3 Rivers Federal Credit Union, the Appleseed Comics and Art Convention will be held at the Grand Wayne Center in downtown Fort Wayne and admission to the event is $10.00. Children 12 and under will be admitted for free with a paid adult admission. Tickets are available at the door.
