It’s free! Community youth get tips
Sunday from Spartan athletes
What’s it like to be a real athlete? North Manchester area youth will find out up-close – and even get some tips about their sports – at the Spartan Youth Sports Circuit at Manchester University on Sunday.
MU Spartan athletes and students in the MU class “Event Management and Promotion” will show off their sports from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, in the Physical Education & Recreation Center (PERC) on the North Manchester campus. The event is free; parents or guardians must accompany participants.
Sports include baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball and soccer – with four 30-minute stations where youth will participate to learn about the different sports. The day concludes with a small health fair and photos with friends and/or the MU mascot, Spartacus. Prizes of donated water bottles and photo opportunities also are planned.
“This is a great opportunity for kids to work with University athletes who want to share their dedication for their sport,” says Kara Gilley, a sophomore education major. She helped develop Spartan Youth Sports Circuit as class project with Caleb Jackson, a sophomore sport management major; Josh Copp, junior sport management major; Justin Miller, sophomore sport management major; Travis Yoakum, junior sport management major; Tyler Krempasky, senior sport management major; and Taylor Harris, senior athletic training major.
“This is more than getting prizes,” said Gilley. “This is a chance for kids to make friendships and memories that can last a lifetime while learning the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.”
