CONSIDER THESE QUESTIONS:
1. Do you regularly hang onto a large number of possessions that most other people would not consider to be very useful or valuable?
2. Is your home, or parts of your home, so cluttered that you can no longer use those parts of the home for their intended purpose?
3. Is the clutter bad enough that it causes you significant distress or impairment (i.e., get into arguments with family
members over the clutter, usually don’t have friends/family over because of embarrassment by the clutter)?
Whether the questions above relate to you or someone you know, Dr. David Tolin will inform program attendees about compulsive hoarding – a common and potentially severe mental health problem characterized by the acquisition of, and failure to discard, a large number of possessions to the extent that living spaces become uninhabitable. Emerging data will be reviewed investigating the nature of hoarding, associated mental health features and new research in brain functioning of people who hoard. Treatment options will also be discussed.
The presenter will be David F. Tolin, Ph.D., ABPP, is the founder and Director of the Anxiety Center, the Division of Neuropsychology, Health Psychology, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) at the Institute of Living, at the Hartford Hospital in Hartford, CT. He is both a national and international expert on anxiety disorders and, in particular, compulsive hoarding. Dr. Tolin is the author of numerous journal articles and book chapters and co-author of the book Buried in Treasures: Help for Compulsive Acquiring, Saving and Hoarding. He has also appeared on The Today Show, Good Morning America, and the Oprah Winfrey Show.
