Event Description
Ceramicist Diana Farfan will present a lecture on her work as part of the Closer Look lecture series at the University of Saint Francis on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 6 p.m. in the North Campus Auditorium. The lecture occurs in tandem with the exhibition “Figurative Ceramics: Lisa Clague, Nancy Kubale and Diana Farfan in Weatherhead Gallery in the Rolland Center for Art and Visual Communication, which is free and open to the public through Feb. 17.
Born in Bogotá, Colombia, Farfán received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the National University of Colombia and her Master of Fine Arts in ceramics at the University of South Carolina. Her two- and three-dimensional works have been exhibited and awarded in a number of places, including Colombia, the U.S. and Taiwan.
Farfan is known for her surrealistic ceramic toys, marionettes, puppets and dolls, illustrating her observations about the ambivalence of the human condition, which she sees as manipulated, fragile, impotent, vulnerable and isolated – countered by the ability to find hope. Her ceramic and mixed-media figures incorporate classical and contemporary elements to represent the human body and its identity in dysfunctional modern times. Weatherhead Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. The exhibition is free and open to the public.
