Event Description
The Office of Military Student Services for Indiana
University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast will honor veterans of the United States Armed Forces at the Second Annual Veterans Day Flag Ceremony, Friday, November 11, at 11 a.m. on the Science Mall at IPFW.
For the first time in its history, Veterans Day will be celebrated at
the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, in a year
ending in 11. In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first Armistice Day in recognition of the cessation of hostilities in World War I. According to the official Veterans
Administration website (www.va.gov), Congress passed a joint resolution in 1926 urging the country to observe November 11 as a day to remember U.S. veterans.
In 1938, Congress made November 11 a legal holiday, citing it as “…a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated and known as Armistice Day.” While the day was meant to remember veterans of World War I, it became apparent in 1954 after World War II and the Korean Conflict that the day needed to be rededicated to all armed forces. So on June 1, 1954, November 11“became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.”
The Flag Ceremony will include remarks from administrators from both IPFW and Ivy Tech-Northeast, as well as veterans. The Science Mall is located between Neff Hall, the Science Building, and the Liberal Arts Building at IPFW. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
