Members of the Williams Woodland Park Neighborhood Association enrolled in a City-sponsored leadership program in conjunction with High Performance Government Network and Leadership Fort Wayne have been working to complete a neighborhood improvement project in their south central neighborhood area, which now culminates with a ribbon cutting ceremony in front of the Rialto Theater at 4:30pm on September 20.
The City of Fort Wayne’s Best Practices Neighborhood Initiative offered leadership training to eight qualifying neighborhood groups. Upon completion of the eight sessions, each group submitted a proposal for a neighborhood improvement project. Two neighborhood groups were selected to receive $50,000 funding to realize their proposal.
Williams Woodland Park submitted a proposal to highlight their area’s rich history and to visibly advertise some of the area’s most attractive features. A light-post banner campaign highlights a few of the area’s best attractions along South Calhoun Street and West Creighton Avenue. Granite markers set within the sidewalk identify 25 structures and highlight their historical significance to the area.
These 25 locations are part of a self guided walking tour dubbed The Historic Beltline Tour. The name was chosen because many of the structures noted are roughly along a trolley route that originally operated as a horse drawn trolley car. The trolley allowed development of the City to spread south to the current Williams Woodland Park area and connected residents to businesses located downtown.
The Williams Woodland Park neighborhood is excited to have the opportunity to participate in this program and glad to be able to contribute to the legacy of our City. The association received an ARCHie Award last May for Community Outreach from the local historic preservation group. The tour was designed to educate the public of past residents that contributed to the success of the City. We hope this serves as a reminder of the achievements born from the south central Fort Wayne area.
The neighborhood association invites all to celebrate the proclamation of Williams Woodland Park day with a ribbon cutting ceremony for The Historic Beltline Tour outside the Rialto Theater (2614 S Calhoun St) at 4:30pm, September 20. Guests are encouraged to walk the tour. Maps and detailed information will be available at Visit Fort Wayne and on site the day of the ceremony. We also invite you st stay immediately following the reception to kick off an exciting art event, Unzip the ’07.
