Pneumonia, a vaccine-preventable disease, remains a substantial cause of morbidity and mortality, yet approximately one-third of adults aged 65 years and older have not received the pneumococcal vaccine. This initiative aims to provide healthcare professionals with education and tools to increase awareness and rates of pneumococcal vaccination in residents of senior housing settings.
The activity learning objectives include discussing the morbidity and mortality of invasive pneumococcal disease in elderly populations; outlining pneumococcal and influenza vaccine recommendations and schedules for residents and healthcare providers; identifying organizational changes and tools to overcome barriers to immunization against pneumococcal disease and Introducing nationally recognized quality measures to improve pneumococcal vaccination rates in residents.
This activity is supported through an educational grant from Pfizer, Inc. and is sponsored by Indiana University School of Medicine and The Academy for Continued Healthcare Learning and is being hosted by Byron Health Center.
This activity is designed for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, case managers and other administrative personnel employed in senior housing and care settings in Indiana. To receive credit, participants must attend the full workshop and submit a completed evaluation form. A certificate of participation will be available to ALL participants.
