The learning at Cornerstone Youth Center doesn’t end with the school year. This summer will feature four “camps” for teens focusing on job readiness, leadership, culinary arts and vocal music. The latter two are new programs this year.
Last winter Heritage High School students indicated in a survey that they would like to learn about cooking and jobs related to culinary arts. In response, Cornerstone organized a culinary arts week to run June 24-28. Area chefs will work with students throughout the week at the center. The week will culminate with two presold public dinners, which will be prepared, served and managed by the students. CYC board member Rhonda Hockemeyer will work with students for each meal to design floral arrangements that will be given away as door prizes. Cornerstone is partnering with the Ivy Tech School of Hospitality Administration, Crackerjack Catering and Pine Valley Country Club to plan and prepare the meals. Other partners for the week include A Party Apart, Forever Friends Floral, Scent of Heaven and Quixote Hills Reception Hall. Certified Executive Chef and Ivy Tech Hospitality Administration Program Chair Jeff Bunting, Executive Chef Michael Bentz of Crackerjack Catering and Executive Chef Aaron Rothgeb from Pine Valley as well as Ivy Tech students will work with Cornerstone members throughout the week. The partners also will speak about jobs available in the hospitality and service industry. The cost of the camp is $10 for students in grades 7-12. The public is invited to the culinary meal showcases on Tuesday, June 25 and Thursday, June 27 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the four-course meals are $25 per person and available by calling Cornerstone at 260-623-3972.
The Force, a free annual workforce development program, runs from July 8-12. Students will engage in mock interviews, make business phone calls, practice public speaking and give a presentation on themselves at the end of the week that showcases their skills and the career path they are preparing to enter. Area business professionals involved in the week include Jack and Linda Stephenson with Cozme International for sales skills building, Barb Smith with B. Smith Office Services on communication and Cindy Hoffman with Thrivent Financial on personal finance. Partners will share about their work experience and the education needed to be employed in each area. The program fee is $35, which includes lunch each day.

Students will participate in Music Week the week of July 22-26, learning the finer points of choral and instrumental music by focusing on selections from “The Lion King.” Students also will have the opportunity to perform in concert for family and friends. In addition, the Fort Wayne Children’s Choir will conduct a one-day workshop with students during the camp. Cornerstone plans to continue the program beyond July if funds can be found to support the program to be managed by the Fort Wayne Children’s Choir. The fee for Music Week is $35, which includes lunch each day.

Leadership Week is an annual event in which students learn the skills of being a successful leader. Cornerstone partners with uLead, a nonprofit leadership organization that serves youth and adults with unique leadership experiences, curriculum and consultation for leadership, growth and change. The week of Aug. 5-9 will include two days of skill building at the Cornerstone location on Monday and Tuesday with Wednesday and Thursday featuring team-building activities in a survival camp setting at Camp Quaker Haven. Leadership Week’s program fee is $30, which includes meals each day. The center will host a Leadership follow-up day on Martin Luther King Day the following January.
