Free Lunch/Free Snack at the Library
June 9 – August 1 (Monday through Friday)
Lunch: 11:45a – 12:45p, Snack: 2:45p – 3:00p
The Children’s Services department at the Main Library is once again participating in offering free summer meals for children ages 1 to 18. Lunch will be available Monday through Friday from 11:45 to 12:45. A nutritious snack will be available from 2:45 to 3:00 Monday through Friday. Free lunch & snack will be available from June 9th through August 1st. There will be no lunch or snack served on July 4th.

Celebrate America

Are you feeling patriotic? School-agers are invited to join us as we create beaded American Flag suncatchers in celebration of our country's birthday. (Supplies for this craft are limited.)

Numbers Play Day

Join the fun of storytime and then grab your grown-up and spend some time at the activity stations designed for parent and child play. They will be set up and available for use throughout the day. The Early Learning Center is open from 9:00 am until 8:00 pm.

Fairy & Gnome Houses
July 10 – 10:30a, 2:00p & 6:30p
Learn about gnome and fairy houses. Then try your hand at making something wonderful which you can take home. This program is geared for children ages 6-11 and their families; younger children are welcome to attend but will need help from their grown-ups. Space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Jim Gill Contagious Tunes Tour

Get ready to sing, clap, dance and sneeze along during this visit by award-winning musician and author Jim Gill . This special concert celebrates the 20th anniversary of the release of Jim’s first recording – Jim Gill Sings The Sneezing Song and Other Contagious Tunes. That recording earned Jim his first of five awards from the American Library Association……and he has been spreading music play to families far and wide ever since! After 20 years Jim is as enthusiastic as ever in his invitation to children, parents and grandparents to sing and play together!

Build it High, Build it Strong!

Blocks and stuff to make’em high! How tall can you build it? How strong can you make it? Test your building skills with us. This program is designed for children of all ages and their families; younger children will need help from their grown-ups. Space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Toddler-palooza!

Tons of fun just right for little ones. This program is for children under the age of 3 and their grown-ups.

Chain Reaction Challenge
July 19 – 9:00a – 12:00p
Families with children in K through 5th grade are invited to create a machine or "link" in this seventh-annual community chain reaction. Work as a team and enjoy the fun by building a contraption that will start with a golf ball rolling down a ramp and end with a golf ball rolling down a ramp. Machines will be built and judged during this 3 hour program. Registration is not required; however, space is limited so it is recommended that you register your group. Only one person needs to register per group.

Pete the Cat Visits the Library

Rock out with this groovy feline. We will have stories, activities, and a visit from Pete. Be sure to bring your camera to get your picture taken with Pete! This program is geared for children of all ages and their families; younger children will need help from their grown-ups. Space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Spy School

Invisible ink. Codes. Gadgets. Come to Spy School to learn about the foundations of being a spy. The library takes this seriously. Speak to no one about this program. Come with an open mind. If you choose to accept this mission the password at the door is: EARS ONLY. This program is geared for children ages 6-11 and their families. Space is limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Summer Reading Program Finale: Kid Kazooey Concert

Wrap up the Summer Reading Program with an outdoor concert on the Main Library’s Plaza Stage. Kid Kazooey and the Ballroom Roustabouts will have us singing and dancing and celebrating our reading success!

40 Developmental Assets

Are you concerned about your child becoming involved in “risky” behaviors, such as alcohol and drug abuse, sexual activity, and violence? Would you like your child to grow up to be a healthy, caring, responsible adult? Come and learn about the 40 DEVELOPMENTAL ASSETS, building blocks of healthy youth development. More is better! The more ASSETS young people have, the more likely they are to engage in positive behaviors and less likely to engage in “risky” behaviors. You can build ASSETS in your kids! This is a cooperative program with Great Kids Make Great Communities and is supported by funds from the Foellinger Foundation. Let’s Watch a Movie

Kids are invited to enjoy a G-rated movie while their grown-ups are learning about The 40 developmental Assets. Today’s movie is Monsters, Inc. Seating is LIMITED! This is a cooperative program with Great Kids Make Great Communities and is supported by funds from the Follinger Foundation.

Toddler & Preschool Drive-In Movie

It's a drive-in movie for toddlers and preschoolers! Start with a cardboard box and create & decorate your own car to "drive" to the drive-in movie. All supplies will be provided.

Sink or Float?

Are you ready for some sopping wet experiments? Drop by the library to see what crazy things will sink and what crazy things will float! This dripping, drenched, and completely soaked event will be lots of fun!

Stuffed Animal Sleepover at the Library
August 1 – 5:00p
Your stuffed animals are invited to a sleepover at the library! Dress in your PJs and bring your stuffed friends to the Main Library for a special bedtime storytime. After stories, you'll tuck in your stuffed friends and wish them “good night”; you’ll go home, your stuffed friends will stay overnight. Come back on Saturday, August 2nd to pick up your stuffed friends anytime during library hours. All stuffed participants will bring home a photo-memory book of their overnight adventures.

Children’s Chess Tournament

Children (preschool through those entering Grade 5) are invited to register to play in this all-day, unrated, "just for fun" Chess tournament. Pre-registration - by Tuesday, July 22nd - is requested of all players. Registration forms will be available at all agencies by May 15th. Say Yes to No: Teaching Kids Self-Discipline

Research indicates a strong link between self-discipline and success in life. But what does self-discipline look like and how do we teach it? Based on the book “No: Why Kids of All Ages Need to Hear It and Ways Parents Can Say It,” this class will address setting boundaries and expectations for children and using “NO” to build self-discipline. This is a cooperative program with Great Kids Make Great Communities and is supported by funds from the Foellinger Foundation. Fort Wayne Youtheatre: Stories Around the World

Fort Wayne Youtheatre's STORYBOOK THEATRE presents “Stories From Around the World” Take a trip around the world with delightful stories from all over the globe! Rainbow Crow (Native America), Abiyoyo (South Africa), Strega Nona (Italy), Magic Mirror (Japan), and Rana Azul (Mexico)… No need for a passport!

Letter “Y” Play Day

Parenting in the Digital Age

Many kids spend more time on “screens” than any other activity (even sleeping!) Should parents be concerned? How does electronic media effect brain development? Is there a daily recommended allowance for screen-time? What do those TV, movie and video game ratings mean? Discussion will include all these topics and more! This is a cooperative program with Great Kids Make Great Communities and is supported by funds from the Foellinger Foundation.
