FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- In this week's episode of Cool Science Monday, Martin Fisher from Science Central will show you a Tornado in a tube.
Martin used a small, plastic item we sell in our Gift Shop. It connects-together two soda bottles. He filled one of the bottles with water and some blue food coloring, and then connected the two bottles. He placed the “Tornado Tube device” on a table with the fluid-filled bottle on top.
By spinning the top bottle, the liquid started to spin and flowed down into the lower bottle. This created what is called a vortex; a spinning or rotating column of fluid. The fluid can be air or water. A tornado is a vortex of air, and a waterspout (or water flowing down a drain) is a vortex of water.
