FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- In this week's episode of Cool Science Monday, Martin Fisher from Science Central will talk about the science of light and the difference between a flashlight and laser light.
Light is a particle that moves as a wave. The wavelengths can be long or short. Each wave has a trough (low part of the wave shape) and a crest (top part). Most light around us is a jumble of different wavelengths, moving in different directions.
A laser has light of the same wavelength, moving in the same direction, and the waves’ crests and troughs line up. This allows laser light to go across great distances and stay focused. Martin shined a flashlight and a laser light on a close-by wall and one further away to show how the flashlight light spreads out and gets dimmer vs the laser.
