FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) -- In this week's episode of Cool Science Monday, Martin Fisher from Science Central will talk about how sound will get higher in pitch when the medium gets smaller and lower in pitch when the medium gets larger.
Martin had a wine glass filled with water. When he rubbed my finger around the rim, it produced a vibration, and a sound. When he poured-out the water and rubbed the rim, the pitch was higher. It was the column of water that vibrated, not the air.
Next, Martin had a 2-liter soda bottle filled with water. When he blew air across the opening, it produced a sound and a vibration. When he poured-out the water and blew air across the top, this time, the pitch was lower. Here, it was the column of air that vibrated, not the water.
