FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- In this week's episode of Cool Science Monday, Martin Fisher from Science Central will talk about air pressure.
We can’t see air, but it’s there. Air has a force of 14.7 pounds per square inch at sea level. Martin showed two hollow, plastic cups that had nothing but air inside of them. When he connected the cups to a vacuum pump, it removed the air from the cups, and they stayed together.
The only thing holding them together was the air in the room, pushing them together. He wasn’t able to pull them apart since they had enough surface area for a couple hundred pounds of pressure on them. Only when he let the air go back into the cups did the air pressure equalize and they came apart.
