Cool Science – 11/12/2012: Center of Mass and Base of Support

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - In this week's episode of Cool Science Monday, Martin Fisher from Science Central talks about the Center of Mass and the Base of Support.

COM is the middle of a weight or object. The lower the COM (the closer it is to the ground), the more stable the object is. BOS is where an object is in contact with the ground. The wider the BOS, the more stable an object is. I showed these concepts with a block of wood that had been cut into the shape of a pyramid.

Watch the video to find out what happens when Martin performs and experiment to find out what happens when a push from the side is given to the pyramid when it’s stood on its top and bottom.
