FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) -- In this week's episode of Cool Science Monday, Martin Fisher from Science Central will talk about a specific part of the traveling exhibit, Wild Minds.
In the experiment, a chimpanzee, orangutan, or even a human child, has to problem-solve (cognition) how to get a peanut out of a tube. They can use what’s around them, but can’t remove the tube which is fixed to the wall, and can’t fit their fingers into the tube since the diameter is too narrow.
Some animals can solve this problem; they add water to the tube and float the peanut to the surface. For humans, a 4-year old gets bored rapidly, a 6-year old gets frustrated and runs out of time, but an 8-year old can solve the problem.
