FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) - It's time for my monthly special report, "The Extra Mile."
It's about a teacher who's dedicated to children in amazing ways even though she's battling stage-four breast cancer.
Linda Babb, a teacher for 14 years, teaches 3 to 5 year olds at MLK Montessori Preschool in Fort Wayne.
She received her diagnosis this year, underwent different treatment, and now is undergoing chemotherapy because the cancer spread throughout her body.
She can't teach in the classroom right now, to stay as healthy as possible.
But she finds other ways to help there.
Her co-workers say Linda's constantly concerned about the needs of her family and her students and their families and doesn't want her cancer to be a disruption on the path to learning.
They nominated Linda on our website because she comes to work every day with a smile on her face and serves as an inspiration.
Linda Babb says, "I came to school every day with my walker, and the kids saw that, so we had to talk about it. We never used the word cancer with the children.
I just told them my back hurt, and my leg hurt, and I was not well, but that they could not get sick from me.
They have a lot on their plate already, and so, if they can see that they can work their way through that, I thought that that was important.
They get inside of your heart, and they become a part of you."
Karrin Marquell says, "I nominated Linda because she really inspired me to look at my own life and see that sometimes you're having a bad day, and you think it's hard to work with the kids sometimes, but here's someone who has an illness, a diagnosis, you know, and a very scary one.
And she can come to work every day and give her all to her kids.
And I know that they need her and how important she is in their lives."
Linda says, "I'm surprised, very humbled.
They're a great group of ladies to work with.
I didn't feel like I had done anything extraordinary, but okay... I'll take it!"
Linda is so strong!
And, the parents of her students appreciate how she still communicates with them.
We congratulate Linda and thank her.
And, Mrs. Babb... you're in our hearts.
If you know someone who goes "The Extra Mile"... nominate them on our website.
