FORT WAYNE, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) This month’s Extra Mile, Circle of Giving recipient is Charis House and Perry Pro Tech who are helping homeless kids... be kids.
"Before they come to the shelter, they’re in survival mode. Many of them have assumed adult-like roles in their families and haven’t really had a chance to just be a kid" explained Heather Applegate, Youth & Family Services Director at Charis House. "Perry ProTech's donation provided an opportunity for us to do things with our kids this summer that we wouldn't have had the funds to do otherwise." Charis House, a ministry of the Rescue Mission, is a homeless shelter for women and children.
One main reason why Ryan Godfrey with Perry ProTech, a business technology solutions provider, wanted his company to be involved is that as the mothers complete their program at the Charis House to help them become self sufficient, the children are able to have a more normal life. "They’re not just being given handouts." Godfrey explained, "The mothers are going thru a program where they are very accountable for their actions and as the kids grow up and see what their mom has done and hopefully emulate the good they have done after going thru this program.. Here comes the next generation of great kids."
Charis House currently has 31 children at the shelter from infant to 15 years old.
Godfrey also challenges other businesses to contact the Rescue Mission, "Take a tour of Charis House or the Rescue Mission and tell me if it doesn't humble and inspire you as much as it did me."
The Rescue Mission has four homes and ministries including: Charis House for homeless women and children; Life House an emergency shelter for homeless men; Restoration House a long term care shelter for men and Treasure House thrift store whose proceeds help fund programming.
