The Whole-Grain Phenomenon: Fad or Trend?
Air Date: 10/8/2008

So many of our favorite products have been touting that they?re made from "healthy whole grains." Just what is a whole grain?

Simply stated, all grains start in fields as whole grains ? they're basically the seeds of grasses. The American Heart Association and doctors tell us of their value to our health if they're left unprocessed. Whole grains, as opposed to refined grains, are important for overall heart health.

Whole grains are a great source of fiber, both soluble and insoluble, as well as important vitamins and minerals. And true whole-grain products list the whole grain, such as whole-wheat, rye, oat, corn or barley, as the main ingredient.

Loads of brands of different products have jumped on the whole-grain bandwagon, including:

  • Breads of all varieties (including white bread)
  • Cereals (even kids' cereals!)
  • Cookies that are claimed to be "better for us"
  • Crackers
  • Chips in different types and flavors
  • Pasta in various shapes and sizes
  • Rice varieties, from plain to flavored combinations

The tide has turned. Lots of our old favorites have been updated, and this trend is sure to stick around because it puts us on the healthy, delicious road to more...
