Too Posh to Push?... C-sections...

By Jennifer Blomquist

Posh Spice did it. Elizabeth Hurley did it... so did Brittany. They're among the stars who reportedly chose to have their babies by C-Section. Some say it fueled the "too posh to push" trend among moms wanting to control childbirth and avoid problems that may go along with it.

"That was like the main reason I didn't want to have a natural birth - because of the pain," says expectant mom Katia Varela.

Before 24-year-old Katia got pregnant, she already knew she wanted a C-Section delivery. But pain wasn't her only concern. "I have heard from people that have had natural births that they don't enjoy sex life as much," she says.

C-sections are at an all-time high in the United States at 30-percent. Four to eighteen percent of those are elective. Doctor Diane Hughes says C-Sections are safer for the baby, but slightly riskier for mom.

"There's a higher risk for infection and that is clearly evidenced in our research," comments Dr. Hughes.

New studies show that women should not have C-Sections if they're planning to have a large family... they risk more pregnancy complications with the following babies. Women are also less mobile after surgery, which could lead to blood clots. And Hughes says they may need extra help when they get home. "Your recovery will take more out of you," she explains.

Before deciding, you need to educate yourself and remember when it comes to childbirth, there's no easy way out.
