New Uses for Yoga

By Jennifer Blomquist

"I think about being calm. I like that you feel relaxed at the end."

Relaxation is very important to 8-year-old Jane Fulshaw's recovery. She's been battling leukemia for two years... now she and her sister practice yoga side by side. "It helps me forget that I have leukemia" says Jane.

Experts say on a physical level, yoga is beneficial because it helps you gain strength and coordination. On an emotional level, it's very calming and can reduce stress hormones.

Yoga instructor and nurse practitioner Mary Jane Ott agrees. "So it has an affect on the blood pressure for the good, it has an affect on the pulse and respiration rates for the good," she says.

Stress relief is also good for pregnant women. Yoga instructor Susan Rothlein says the moves she teaches in her classes helps moms-to-be feel more comfortable in their changing bodies. "Some of the poses women will naturally use to help them feel comfortable and help with the birth are yoga poses that we do in class," she explains.

Stresses and strains are familiar to any performing artist... and opera singer Kelly Griffen says the yoga offered by her theater company helps. "It's not so much that it directly affects the voice, but it affects all the muscles in the body, which, if they are not relaxed, are not going to produce a nice vocal tone," she says.

It's not just singing... public speakers could also let go of tension and strengthen their delivery with the same kinds of moves. so whether it's the long road to recovery or preparation for something big... there'a yoga program for everyone.
