Ballroom Dancing

By Jennifer Blomquist

From the movie screen to the small screen... ballroom dancing is hot!

Dance instructor and dance hall owner Hallie Kuperman says, "Not every single class if full, but we're really close."

After a divorce six years ago, Laura Caparosso started taking classes to meet people. "It was very therapeutic," she says.

At first she was shy and felt uncoordinated... but not anymore...

"People are amazed that I can do it," says Laura.

Amazed because Laura is blind.

"First they treat me like I'm going to break, it's like a little crystal rose and it's like I can do the steps... then when they see me dancing they're suprised that I can actually do it well," she says proudly.

Doing it well has boosted Laura's self esteem... as dancing does for many students. Kuperman says that's because,"It makes you a little more alive, it does give you more confidence, it does get you out socially in a way we're just not really used to anymore."

Not only does dancing boost confidence... it's also a great way to get in shape. Low impact, fast ballroom dancing can help you burn up to 387 calories an hour... that's the same as if you were walking, playing tennis or jogging.

Great motivation to get you out on the dance floor!
