Dancing Your Way to a Long Life

By Jennifer Blomquist

Doris Eaton Travis never passes up a chance to perform. It's been her life since she was a child. At 14 she tagged along with her sister and was picked as a Ziegfeld Follies girl... the extravagant dance team that lit up Broadway from 1907 to 1930.

"It was just a beautiful experience of glamour and meeting wonderful actors and actresses," says Doris.

During the Depression she became a dance instructor, married one of her pupils and became a ranchers wife. At 83 she went back to get her degree... with a little push from her husband. "He says... now we're 15 minutes from the university... either shut up or put up," she laughs.

Learning something new every day as she danced is Doris's biggest tip to leading a fulfilled life... along with stearing clear of bad habits.

"I didn't drink. I didn't smoke. I was always busy getting a lot of physical exercise with my dancing," says Doris who is also an author... and now in her second century she's the subject of a new book. In between her quest for knowledge and her faith, there's always that urge to do the things she loves the best.

"If you don't keep opening the doors, you're not going to go anyplace," she advises.

And Doris is still opening doors at 102.
