FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--Andrea: We’re always behind on our bills; have to pay ‘em before it gets disconnected. Right now we have our gas turned off so we’re living without gas.
THIS IS THE FACE OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION IN AMERICA. ANDREA IS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN, BORN AND RAISED IN FORT WAYNE. HER HUSBAND FRANKY IS HERE ILLEGALLY FROM MEXICO. ROBERTO IS THE YOUNGEST OF THEIR TWO CHILDREN. FRANKY IS A DRYWALLER BUT WITH CONSTRUCTION ALMOST AT A HALT, HE’S LUCKY TO WORK ONE DAY A WEEK.
Andrea: Behind on our bills, our house, struggling with our kids. What about your house? We haven’t paid on our house for a year and now we’re just waiting to see when we’re gonna get kicked out of our house.
BECAUSE FRANKY IS HERE ILLEGALLY THERE IS NO UNEMPLOYMENT CHECK TO HELP MAKE ENDS MEET. THEIR HOME IS STRIPPED ALMOST BARE. IN THE PAST YEAR EVERYTHNG’S BEEN SOLD TO PAY BILLS.
Andrea: We have our little one, I mean he’s growing and it’s hard to buy stuff for him. It’s either buy food or buy diapers.
FRANKY AND ANDREA BEGAN THE PROCESS OF APPLYING FOR CITIZENSHIP, BUT THE APPLICATION ALONE COSTS 800 DOLLARS. THEY CAN’T AFFORD TO CONTINUE IT RIGHT NOW. SO AT ANY MOMENT FRANKY COULD BE ARRESTED, JAILED AND SENT BACK TO MEXICO.
Andrea: For me it’s scary. For my husband that you know he’ll go to work one day and not come home. And for his kid, he’s a daddy’s boy. All the time. So it’s scary. I mean if he gets sent back I don’t have a roof I don’t have a car. It’s like I’ll be stuck out on the street.
RAYMUNDO IS A CLOSE FAMILY FRIEND, ALSO MARRIED WITH TWO CHILDREN…ALSO IN THE COUNTRY ILLEGALLY AND IN CONSTANT DANGER OF DEPORTAION.
Raymundo: It’s hard, hard for us just to think you’re gonna get our and sent to jail. Basically I’m here for my kids, to have better future than the one I’m having right now myself. And hoping that they’ll get better vocation and a better life, a better life.
