FORT WAYNE, Indiana (Indiana's NewsCenter)--The late 1800’S were the hey days of Fort Wayne, The town was fairly upscale, made most of what it needed from clothing to beer, and Fort Wayne’s up and ups were rewarding themselves with fine new homes concentrated mostly in the area west of downtown, known today as the West Central neighborhood.
“There is a great mix of housing from very relatively inexpensive homes to very grand homes that are fully restored,” says neighborhood association treasurer Chris Ruckman.
West Central’s happy jumble of mansions and row houses used to be a well-kept secret but the secret’s out of the bag. This old neighborhood has just been chosen the Best Old House Neighborhood of 2010 in the entire state by This Old House magazine. It features west central in its current online edition.
Chris Ruckman made the nomination to This Old House magazine. He says the mix of impressive homes, bungalows, fixer uppers and rental apartments makes the neighborhood affordable for everyone. And of course the advantages to near downtown living…
“West Central is very centrally located,” Ruckman says. “It’s easy to get to everything some of the best restaurants are in West Central and downtown Fort Wayne.”
It’s really the best of both worlds, the old world charm that produced west central, and the new world challenges o that make living spaciously near downtown an advantage these days. It’s a very happy circumstance that comes in a very pretty package. Eric Olson reporting, out in ‘Your Country’.
