FORT WAYNE, Ind. (21Alive) - Fort Wayne Community Schools will buy nearly 700 Apple iPads for the district.

The school board approved Monday night the purchase of 690 iPads and 23 Apple TVs for elementary school students and teachers.

Teachers must apply in an competitive selection process, and explain how they will use the iPads in their curriculum.

"All levels have an ipad initiative going on, but the elementary (school use) is expanding tremendously," FWCS Elementary School Area Administrator Pat Musick says. "It's an integrated portion of instruction. So our goal: kids are comfortable with technology, we want them to use it as a learning tool, and we want them to help drive instruction and curiosity."

A committee will review the applications, and award 30 iPads, a cart and Apple TV to the winning teachers.

The iPads will cost $346,587, and will be paid for by the Common School Fund.
