WASHINGTON (21Alive) - A bill that would fund the National Guard during the federal government shutdown passed the U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday night.
House Bill 3230, or the Pay Our Guard and Reserve Act, passed 265 to 180.
A similar legislation, the GARDS Act or Guard Appropriation Restoration During Shutdown Act, introduced by U.S. Rep. Marlin Stutzman, R-3rd District, was introduced earlier this week.
"The House has taken a stand for everyday heroes who defend our country, states, and neighbors," Stutzman says. "While Senate Democrats prove more interested in rejecting serious House proposals than addressing problems, the House is offering common ground that we can agree on."
The bill now heads to the U.S. Senate for consideration.
About 1,000 Indiana National Guard troops, including more than 200 at the 122nd Fighter Wing, have been furloughed as a result of the government shutdown.
21Alive had previously reported that the bill that passed the House was the bill introduce by Stutzman, which is incorrect. The story above has been modified to reflect the correct information.
