NORTH MANCHESTER, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- A 9/11 expert told Indiana's NewsCenter, Americans are safe but not as safe as we "should be."

The Honorable Lee H. Hamilton, co-author of the 9/11 Commission Report spoke at Manchester College Thursday afternoon.

Hamilton spent 34 years as an Indiana U.S. Congressman.

He is regarded as a world renowned 9/11 and foreign policy expert.

Hamilton's lecture topic, the U.S. role in the world after Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hamilton's speech revolved around the four central realities that shape our world.

1. America is and will be the most powerful nation in the world.

2. China is a rising world power and regional powers like Brazil and Indonesia deserve respect.

3. Globalization, is no longer a trend. It is a reality that touches every aspect of our lives.

4. There is still turmoil in the world.

Hamilton said everyone should be aware and somewhat worried about nuclear weapons, the world's economy and America's dependence on foreign oil.

Hamilton told the crowd of nearly 200 students and community members that the U.S. military has the might to wipe out any threat but war alone, will not solve our problems.

"The challenge to the United States is to continue to lead the world but to do so smartly, to do with great prudence, to recognize our own limitations, to seek a lot of help but to lead," said Former Indiana 9th District Democrat Congressman Lee Hamilton in an exclusive interview with Indiana's NewsCenter.

"The world turns to this country for leadership and we must respond," said Hamilton.

Before his lecture, Hamilton was honored by Manchester College with an honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
