FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) - Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent for Christians and Catholic Bishop Kevin Rhoades celebrated Ash Wednesday with Mass from the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Ft. Wayne.
The Lenten season prepares Catholics for Easter via a season of fasting and prayer to renew one’s self and prepare for the greatest of all Christian seasons, Easter.
By having the sign of the cross made with ashes on their foreheads, Catholics mourn Christ's suffering on the cross and their own sins, which made that suffering necessary.
The Lenten season lasts 40 days, in honor of Christ’s time spent in the desert prior to his public ministry.
