FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) -- Click It or Ticket. Make sure you buckle up when you head out this weekend, extra police officers will be patrolling the streets.
Thousands of overtime hours will be funded in part by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute says more than half of the 754 people killed in Indiana traffic crashes were not wearing seatbelts.
“When we first started this in Indiana we had 17 fatalities in a four day Memorial Day weekend,” says Law Enforcement Liaison Lance Grubbs, “Since we've been doing this, the enforcement periods, the Click It or Ticket, and everything else, we've averaged about a little over five fatalities statewide.”
The crackdown goes until June 5th.
