FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana's NewsCenter) -- Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry and the City of Fort Wayne have been recognized as the 2011 Outstanding Government Entity in Promoting the Principles of Urban Forestry in Indiana.

The award was presented at the recent 21st Annual Indiana Urban Forest Council Conference at Fort Harrison State Park Inn. The Council recognized Mayor Henry’s initiative and long-term plan to deal with the Emerald Ash Borer Crisis.

"Fort Wayne has a very progressive urban forestry program, and their response to Emerald Ash Borer and the hundreds and hundreds of removals have led to budget dollars to restore and protect the urban forest. The city is to be commended for their forward thinking urban forestry program in regards to EAB - especially during this time of recession. Through various financial avenues, the city has put dollars into removals, replacement, treatment, utilization of ash logs, a complete street tree inventory and analysis along with an Emergency Response Plan," said Lee Huss, Bloomington's City Forester.

The Indiana Urban Forest Council promotes public understanding of the need for trees and other natural resources in and along parks, green space areas, streets and urban woodlots and assists Indiana communities in protecting, expanding, and improving their urban forests.

The Council is a broad-based volunteer organization dedicated to assisting the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, Community and Urban Forestry program, non-profit groups, and volunteer groups through educational programming.
