INDIANA, (Indiana's NewsCenter) --- An Indiana Congressman visiting Fort Wayne Friday said the president is at least partly to blame for escalating gasoline prices that are hurting Hoosier motorists.
Indiana 6th District Congressman Mike Pence, of course, can't say the commander-in-chief is the whole problem, but he did say President Obama could do more to help the situation.
Pence took a tour of the Fort Wayne Rescue Mission in downtown Fort Wayne, seeing firsthand where homeless men bunk in the emergency shelter.
Mission leaders say they provide more than 400 meals a day to male residents.
But Pence said the fiscal health of other Hoosiers could be boosted, if we could get a better handle on gas prices.
He says President Obama is making matters worse.
U.S. Rep. Mike Pence/(R) Indiana 6th District: " I take no joy in saying it, but I think the rising gasoline prices are a direct result of wrong policies by this administration. We've simply seen one effort after another by this administration to limit access to developing our own domestic reserves."
Pence was referring to what he believes has been an action plan by President Obama to stop deep water drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, and to cancel the Keystone Pipeline from Canada.
Pence also disputed the notion that the top Republican presidential candidates will become damaged goods because of the brutal fight over key social issues in the nominating process.
Pence says the Democrats had a similar bruising battle in the 2008 presidential primary.
Pence went on to say, “If memory serves, they actually won that election in the fall”.
He feels that the republican primary will serve to sharpen the party’s ultimate nominee.
Pence is now the clear frontrunner to become the Republican nominee in the Indiana governor’s race.
Jim Wallace on Thursday abandoned his effort to seek the office.
Pence complimented current Republican Governor Mitch Daniels, saying the next governor should be prepared to build on Daniels’ successes, moving the focus from “reforms to results”.
