DECATUR, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – The town of Decatur is carving out their economic future by beautifying their downtown with sculptures.
The town of Decatur held its first annual Sculpture Walk Thursday night. The goal is to have a fun event that helps spur economic growth in the community.
“It’s really an outdoor gallery for artists to display their work,” said Wes Kuntzman, Executive Director of the Decatur Chamber.
Kuntzman says it's a plan that's been in place for years and has now molded into this event. He says organizers got the idea from the sculpture walk in Sioux Falls, SD. Not only will the art add to Decatur's appeal, it will give it an economic boost.
“It brings business to Decatur, and it brings people to Decatur, so they'll find out what a great place Decatur is,” Kuntzman said. “We're also trusting that it will grow over the years and the Sculpture Walk will continue to become a bigger event each year.”
Decatur's Sculpture Walk features 12 pieces by nine local and out-of-state artists. The sculptures are constructed from one or more mediums, including welded steel, mahogany, walnut and fiberglass.
Each work of art is up for sale or can be leased. Prices range from $2,500 to $500,000. The only stipulation is the sculptures must remain on display until next year’s Sculpture Walk in June 2013, before buyers can take possession. When they sell, or are leased, artists will be able to keep most of the earnings, but some of the proceeds will return to the city to help fund future efforts to purchase permanent art for the community.
One of the 12 sculptures will win the People’s Choice Award and will be permanently displayed in downtown Decatur. The winner will be announced Nov. 30. Organizers say as the years go by, the hope to develop an art garden where all People’s Choice Award works will be displayed.
