INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (21Alive) -- It was announced today that Indiana Supreme Court Justice Brent E. Dickson will be stepping down later this year, but will remain on the court until 2016.

Dickson has served as the Chief Justice for just a little over two years and has sat on the court since 1986. He plans on stepping down as Chief Justice on September 1 and will continue to serve until his mandatory retirement in 2016 when he turns 75.

In a release sent out today, Dickson said " Knowing that my tenure as Chief Justice was limited, each Associate Justice has actively participated in much of the administrative responsibilities and decisions of the office of Chief Justice." He observed, "The time is right for this transition. The Court and state will be well served when one of my colleagues is selected as the next Chief Justice.”
