Fort Wayne, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) - 49-year-old Jackie had a restraining order against the man Fort Wayne Police say killed her Wednesday. But that didn't stop her from being murdered in cold blood in broad daylight after she was dragged off a Citilink bus by her killer.
"That's a really tricky situation because I could get on the bus this morning. I could have a protective order, somebody gets on that bus, I have the protective order against that person. At that point, that's not part of my safety plan,” said Mary Jo Hardiman, Chief Program Officer, YWCA.
YWCA Northeast Indiana works with victims of domestic violence. Hardiman says the most important thing victims can do is have a plan, for every possible situation, especially after leaving an abusive relationship. Hardiman says in the wake of this tragic killing the YWCA has taken more calls from victims who are looking for a way out.
"Seeing something like this, right here in our community, really takes it to a different level and you say, you know what, that could have been me,” said Hardiman.
The man police say killed Jackie, Kenneth Knight, had a criminal history including domestic abuse charges. He had recently been released from prison and was on probation. Knight was shot by snipers after a nine hour man hunt Wednesday.
"Domestic violence is a cyclical process, and so what happens is you have that tension, all of that domestic violence going on, and then there is that explosion, which in this incident we see what the explosion was, it resulted in death,” said Hardiman.
While a protective order can help Hardiman says alone it isn't enough. Victims need to be prepared for that person to just show up by having a plan for every situation.
Victims of domestic violence can get help from the YWCA by calling the center's crisis help line at 1-800-441-4073.
