Early HIV Testing Prevents Prenatal Transfer

UNDATED, Ind. (www.incnow.tv) – Sunday is National Women and Girl’s HIV and Aids awareness day.

In honor of that, the Indiana State Department of Health is pushing the importance of peri-natal HIV testing.

Since the beginning of the epidemic in the 1980s, there have been 826 reported cases of children in Indiana infected peri-natally with HIV.

To prevent this, the Center for Disease Control recommends that all pregnant women be screened for HIV as early as possible during pregnancy. State health officials say by doing that, only one-to-two percent of pregnant women with HIV will transmit the virus to their unborn children.

Without proper treatment, there is a 25 percent chance of transmission.
