FORT WAYNE, Ind. (Indiana’s NewsCenter) – Allen County Election Board officials say early voting turnout is flourishing for the 2011 Municipal Elections.

Things are quite busy at the Allen County Election Board office these days. Beth Dlug, Director of Elections, says 800 people have already voted early, which is twice as many early votes than from the 2007 elections.

“We are doing very well for a Municipal Election right now,” Dlug said.

They’ve also received 3500 mailed absentee ballots. Dlug credits the turnout to the candidates, and an exciting Mayoral Election between Democratic Incumbent, Tom Henry, and Republican Challenger, Paula Hughes, in particular.

“A lot of it has to do with turnout of the candidates and interesting races,” Dlug said. “The candidates have been pushing absentee voting, they both have had mailers that have gone out. We've got a lot of response in our office to those mailers. We know that the candidates are very involved in getting the voters out.”

On Election Day, Dlug expects anywhere from 36-37 percent voter turnout. That’s equals out to about 68,000 registered Allen County voters.

The final day for early voting is Monday, November 7. The Allen County Election Board is open from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and now Saturdays from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. The Allen County Election Board office is located at 1 West Superior Street in downtown Fort Wayne.
